Rocking Chair- Part 11 |
|
This jig holds an arm blank firmly at an angle to an angled straight edge which is clamped to my new tablesaw. The three handles are for bits of threaded rod that screw through tee nuts and clamp the blank securely. As you can see from the two end pieces of the jig, I have already hollowed this arm blank by sliding it across the sawblade, which I raise a 32nd of an inch at a time.

As you can see, this jigging arrangement takes up most of the available space on the top of my new saw. That fact, coupled with the requirement that the hollowing be done with a ten inch blade, absolutely ruled out use of my TS 2000 which has done such sterling work for me in the past. However, I have now sold that saw and am grateful I have this much larger one to use in future. |

Here is the arm, now bandsawn from the blank and preliminary shaping done with the tools you see in this picture. I don't use a drawknife much but it is a nice tool to use when you get the hang of it. I find that bevel down, very fine control can be achieved and whereas I could have done without it, using only the block planes/spokeshaves etc. it does speed things up because you can take quite a big bite with it if need be - also a very fine one come to that.
If I were really expert with it, I wouldn't need all those other fancy tools! |

Back to the legs and here I have bandsawn the second dimension in one back leg (on the left). The other leg was done next, so now I have two legs roughly shaped and ready for some rounding using the router.
