Noises off ( or more accurately, noise”’’s off)
Published by woodgen June 21st, 2007 in Audio, Bits and Pieces, GoldwingI have a helmet equipped with an Autcom headset - sadly the Autocom unit is no longer to be found but I figured that all I needed was a 5 pin DIN cable extension and I would be able to connect my helmet to the bike”’’s 5 pin fly lead. Well, I can but unfortunately it doesn””t really wow me. The volume in the headset is pathetic and the speakers (my lonely pair of front speakers - boohoo) are quite a bit louder. I guess that the missing Autocom unit probably has an amplifier in it but being an electrical nincompoop, I really don””t know if I can do anything short of replacing the headset of buying a new Autocom unit. I really am not keen on the latter option, it seems daft when there is equipment built into the bike for the purpose. All advice gratefully received!
Hey Chris,
Autocom use powered headsets… certainly the mic is powered but I don””t believe the speakers are but they are very high impedance. The GW intercom is passive and designed for low impedance headsets. Basically what that means is that Autocom headsets are not designed to work straight off the GW intercom system. Sorry.
You””re right in your two options… you either need to replace the headsets which will mean helmet surgery for a decent sound or interface an Autocom intercom system to the GW. I believe they make adapters and cables for doing this.
I fitted J&M headsets to our Schuberth C2 helmets and while it”’’s certainly nerve wracking cutting a C2 helmet around, the resulting sound is very good.

Dave.
Hi Dave,
Thanks for the information. I think I prefer to go with just a headset at this stage rather than a full Autocom system. I guess from the number of people buying J&M sets that these are preferred over the Honda OEM kit although I haven””t seen a lot of comment on the latter - some stuff about wind noise is all really.
I see that Starcom do a headset specifically for the Goldwing and according to a testimonial here http://www.starcom1.com/testimonials.htm one person seems to think they are better than J&M units so I wonder why your system couldn””t be used on the Wing, as mentioned in your blog?
Having said that about a headset only, I shall trip down to Dobles and see what James, their nice helmet man, recommends. It”’’s just possible that an Autocom system might be better for stuff like CB which I can see coming eventually if I do much group riding.
Regards,
Chris
